Dappermarkt in East Amsterdam is an adventure for the senses and has been deemed the best market in the Netherlands. Located along Dapperstraat, the market reflects the eclectic mix of residents in the area – namely immigrants from Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and beyond.

Dapperstraat was designated as a shopping street by the City of Amsterdam back in 1910. A favorite haunt for locals, it is not overrun by tourists, though it does draw in Dutch people from all over the Netherlands, and many newly-landed immigrants looking to connect with others and find ingredients from their homelands.

Highlights of Dappermarkt

The Dappermarkt is a great place for inexpensive shopping, with some items costing as little as one Euro. Along with 250 unique stands owned by 160 merchants, the street is lined with cafes and restaurants offering international cuisine.

National Geographic named Dappermarkt one of the Top 10 Shopping Streets in the World, comparing it to more renowned street market experiences, such as Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. One can find anything from clothing and shoes, cosmetic and shops specializing in foreign foods, such as a Turkish bakery and a Halal butcher. Locals know it is a great place to buy items such as cheese and other groceries at a lower price.

Good things to know about visiting Dappermarkt

The Dappermarkt can get crowded, as it is a popular place to buy fruits, vegetables and other foodstuffs. It is a great place to experience firsthand the diversity and multiculturalism that Amsterdam is known for. Be sure to check the website as there are live music events as well as seasonal and special events.

There are many different ways to access Dappermarkt through public transportation on buses, streetcars and even by boat in the summer. There is a lot to see and do, but as with any other large market, be mindful of the possibility of pickpockets.
