This hotel/inn is probably one of the nicest in the world and stands above all others that we visited on our 12 day road trip through Scotland and England in August 2019. From the reception to the nice and communicative bar atmosphere to the silky linen, the jacuzzi (that worked) and the extraordinary breakfast (eggs Benedict), we felt transported onto a new level of comfort.
The String of Horses Inn is a bit isolated, so future travellers should have a little juice left in their smartphones, and use the direction assistance on the Hotels.com website to find this marvellous place. Also, wifi is not at its strongest, so go sit at the bar (17th century), rather than in your room!
We had a fantastic stay at the String of Horses. It is a beautifully renovated property in a lovely location. The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing.
The staff - special mention for Sam - were helpful and there when needed. I forgot to pack our toothbrushes and we were supplied with them free of charge. The bedroom was small but it's an old coaching inn so many irregularities to be expected. The bathroom was big! Dinner and breakfast were very good and the location is good. Not far to the lake district or borders and very peaceful in a small village.
Quiet, remote setting near Hadrianâs Wall and lovely scenic drives. Authentic 17th century coaching inn with lots of historic charm in the common areas. We stayed 5 days in the clean, comfortable family quarters with plenty of room and a huge shower. Nice, friendly staff. Really good food. The eggs benedict at breakfast was super. Plenty of free on-site parking.
Heads up to foreigners: Do your business in GB Pounds. Although we were not asked our preference, we received a 4.95% upcharge to convert payment to our local currency.
This was an adorable, historic inn in a tiny town near Hadrians Wall. We ate dinner and breakfast at the pub downstairs. The food was good with vegetarian and vegan options. It was so quiet. We slept with the windows open and I heard only one car the emote stay.
Lovely visit. Charismatic place steeped in a sense of history in a quote location. The room eras wonderful and I love a big TV.
Food was lovely.. Wonderful stay
Very friendly and attentative service.
Rooms are recently refurbished to a high standard.
Food was excellent - full breakfast and good selection on the menu (including specials) for dinner.
The String Of Horses was an amazing place to stay. A quietly located inn it has superbly appointed rooms - the bathroom was amazing and the bed large and so comfortable; a lively restaurant serving quality high food and comfortable bar with an open fireplace.
Staff are friendly and provide an amazing service from front of house and throughout the bar and restaurant.
The breakfast service is high quality too with lovely food prepared to order.
Well worth a visit and weâll be back đ
Quaint country pub with rooms. The staff are really helpful and friendly. The place is very clean and looks welcoming. However the room I had was small and basic but the bed was comfy and everything worked. Nowhere to sit comfortably or even to do some work. Food is very tasty especially the evening meals. Breakfast choice very good and again delicious food well presented. Thank you.
