I was by myself in the Voksenaasen hotel for a citytrip from 16 to 20 August 2010. The hotel is lovely situated up the hills above Oslo, near famous Holmenkollen ski-jump. I booked very last minute, and this simply was the cheapest available hotel in a generally pricy city.
I was lucky enough to do some research up ahead. The metroline is out until Mid December 2010, with a substituting busline. It takes 30 minutes to get from the hotel to the Majorstuen metrostation. The bus (1B) stops parallel to the tracks on the street. When leaving the hotel, note that the bus does not go two-way! It was very disappointing to see there was no note of this on the hotel website. Due to late arrival with Norwegian, I asked for specfic directions from Oslo S to the hotel. All I got was a disappointing short answer referring to bus 1B at Majorstuen. Luckily the Oslo public transport works perfectly, so I managed to catch the last bus at 0.30.
The hotel is just nice, made for conferences but private enough for leisure. Friendly and helpfull staff. Breakfast buffet is very good and friendly serving hours. My room was clean, but very basic. I would have expected to receive a little more for the money. A shower screen has to prevent water spills in the bathroom, but it hardly does its job. The quilt was way too small (or me at 1.95m too long). Also too bad the sauna was open from 15.00 to 21.30 (just the time you are out!).
It all depends on what you want. This hotel will be more to your liking when visiting in the winter/for winter sports. In the summer, it may be a little too far from Oslo centre. All in all, a fine hotel.
