We stayed at The Desert Cave hotel, room 10, at 25th of October. Coober Pedy is the Opal Capital of the world, but be prepared, opals are not cheap. Due to extreme day temperatures inhabitants has made below-ground residences, called "dugouts". The name "Coober Pedy" origins from the Aboriginal word “kupa-piti”, meaning "White man’s hole”. The summa plus ultra, is an undergroud hotel, of course. We made a reservation in advance to be sure to get an underground room. No airco and a delicious temperature. Perhaps our best night rest of the whole Australia tour we experienced here. Spacious non-smoking room, couch and seperate seating. We recommend the Umberto restaurant. WiFi only in public rooms and not free In the 21st century this is a commodity like water and electricity, 7x24 WiFi must be integral part of room price.
