Cavalier Hotel: fine hotel perfectly located in cosmopolitan Hamra
I stayed with the Cavalier for a week, and I am glad that I chose them instead of the more expensive boutique hotel in downtown Beirut that I was first tempted by.
The service was excellent. They have a very professional and efficient staff, who are 24h/day on their post. For example, checking out at 5am in the morning only took five minutes, which was good because I overslept and was in a hurry to catch my plane. The rooms have as-good-as-new carpet and a handy electronic curtain that keeps out everything; light, heat, dust, bugs etc, while still leaving through some fresh air. The only thing that wasn't quite perfect were the mattresses on the bed, which had some kind of plastic cover on them.
Breakfast is ok, with fresh pancakes and toast and fruit en vegetables etc.
And the location is a big plus. The Cavalier is located roughly at the eastern edge of Hamra, so you can explore this part of town and also reach downtown - and even east Beirut - easily on foot. And if you want to go to the Corniche (seaside boulevard), you can simply walk straight down - without having to circle around the American University that blocks Hamra from the sea on the north side.
